Ristar was the swan song of SEGA's 16 bit Genesis console, but it was one of the system's best games full stop. Inventive and technically impressive, it is easily one of the most creative and entertaining action games ever released on the platform.

Take on the role of a fearless star who has to save planets from a galactic tyrant in this unique 2D side scrolling game. Jump on the platforms, overcome obstacles and defeat powerful bosses along your way. Your hero's special ability to stretch his arms is his key weapon in this cosmic adventure. His long limbs can be used to grab enemies, crush them or even propel him through the levels with a spin.

The gameplay is simple: with the controls on the left of the screen you'll move your hero from one side of the screen to the other, while the buttons on the right let you jump and use Ristar's huge hands to climb and cling to walls. This is where Ristar differs from the likes of Sonic, as it doesn't speed through levels or jump very high, but relies on grabbing and headbutting enemies for much of its movement.

The stages also incorporate a variety of fun gimmicks to add extra challenge. For instance, in the water stage called Undertow, stepping on certain floors will make Ristar dance, while on the planet Freon, Ristar can swim around in near-frozen water.
